Don’t let intruders in or keep your employees out. Access control systems restrict access and provide security for doors, entrances, gates, computers, and more. The three main categories of such systems are:
- Discretionary Access Control (DAC)
- Mandatory Access Control (MAC)
- Role Based Access Control (RBAC)
- Discretionary Access Control (DAC)
It allows users to set permissions and grant access to specific people. DAC is suitable for small organizations, and it is not very time-consuming. It can be applied in a simple manner and does not require a lot of management effort.
However, there still is the danger of being vulnerable to hackers, as intruders can easily breach security if someone has access to the system. - Mandatory Access Control (MAC)
It is very secure and strict and is used in critical situations. Unlike DAC, MAC does not allow the owner to grant access. The system decides who gets access to what information/area, when they get it, and where they get it.
The owner can only restrict access if with the help of a professional. Such systems are exceptionally secure and almost impossible to hack. The only downside is that the owner does not have total control. - Role Based Access Control (RBAC)
RBAC is a popular choice for organizations that want a balance of security and functionality. It combines the best features of DAC and MAC.
While it’s a user-friendly option, it is still very stringent and secure. Performers can set permissions according to their role and position in the company. The access levels are easily changeable.
The system still gives the owner complete control when it is necessary. However, it requires a lot of management effort to work correctly.
